Organic food explained
Organic food is so named because the crops or livestock from which it originated were farmed and produced organically. In terms of crops, a rotation system of planting is used. This means that a different type of crop is grown on a given piece of land each season. This builds up the strength, structure and fertility of the soil because of the different organisms introduced into it by different plant species. The soil quality is further enhanced by the avoidance of the use of synthetic, and sometimes toxic, chemical inputs. These are known as pesticides, fertilizers, herbicides and fungicides, and are used in conventional, intensive farming. Natural resistance to pests and disease is developed in the soil through organic farming, as natural, organic soil inputs are used in the form of manure, compost and other organic soil additives. This in turn builds up the health of the soil. Further, no genetically modified materials are used in organic farming. GM has not yet been proven to be safe. To the contrary, research has shown that genetic manipulation of cells can disrupt the metabolism of organisms. Organic food is free of GM. In terms of livestock, animals are housed in a comfortable and stress-free environment with plenty of space. They are allowed to range freely, and to graze on and eat naturally from organically farmed land and plants. Further, livestock animals are not routinely force-fed drugs such as antibiotics and growth hormones, unlike conventional livestock farming. Antibiotics are only used on organically farmed animals if an illness requires it. As a result of these organic farming methods, the food produced is far healthier than conventionally, non-organic food. Much research has found that organically produced food is more nutritious. Vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other beneficial substances are found in greater abundance and quality in organic produce. Indeed, the health of the whole environment is improved by the production of organic food, as soil, water and air all benefit from being spared contamination by synthetic chemicals and the destruction of wildlife caused by conventional, intensive farming methods. |
